Slip disc is the non-medical term for herniated disc, which is also known as Ruptured disc, bulging disc, or prolapsed disc. It is referred to as slip disc because according to common people the pain is caused because the disc moves from it original position within the spine. Vertebral disc are flexible, rubbery cushions that supports the vertebral bones. They allow the spine to twist and bend. Each disc has a soft inner nucleus pulposus that is surrounded by fibrous outer wall. The core of the nucleus pulposus is made up of watery material (which consists of inflammatory proteins) and collagen fibers. A herniated disc occurs when a nucleus pushes through the outer wall. This herniation can result in a large bulge that can press against the nearby nerve roots which causes the symptoms of extreme pain, weakness and immobility in the spinal cord or an adjacent nerve.

Slip Disk occurs due to sitting continuously for long hours and not exercising regularlyas well asimproper body movements due to sports activities or improper lifting of heavy goods. Anti-inflammatory medicines like aspirin, celecoxib (Celebrex), Diclofenac (Cambia, Voltaren-XR etc.), Ibuprofen (e.g. Motrin, Advil), Indomethacin (Indocin) can be taken after Doctor’s consultation. Injections can be used to treat pains like Epidural steroid injections, Selective Nerve Root Blocks Injections, Facet Rhizotomy and Sacroiliac Joint Block injections. Sometimes Neurotic Drugs are also given to reduce pain Carbamazepine (Tegretol), Gabapentin etc.

Physiotherapy and Light Weight Exercise
